The battle of Hastings was held 10km away from Hastings itself and was fought at Senlac Hill. But the question is, why did William win? One very important point as to why William won the battle of Hastings, was because William was a skilful, brave and determined leader who kept his army disciplined and under control. He was on horseback which made it easy for him to communicate with his army and made him very mobile. Also, William provoked Harold by burning, destroying and looting nearby villages. He burnt down his own ships so his army knew that they were not going to return to France unless they won the battle; this gave the army a boost in determination.

There were several ways William Duke Of Normandy showed of his skills as a leader before and during the battle. Firstly before the battle he gathered up an army of about 8,400 people. He also skillfully arranged his soldiers in the order of crossbowmen first then foot soldiers, and lastly the cavalry. On top of that he had multiple plans, such as when he pretended to be dead, so the Normans would retreat, and when the Saxons to rested their shield wall was one of the most important factors of why William Of Normandy beat the Saxons because the Normans couldn't break through their shield wall and were losing because if it. Thirdly, he took time to train his soldiers and give them proper armor. As could be seen this made William's army stronger, because it was hard to kill them with their armor. This meant that William's soldiers wouldn't have died as frequently as the Saxons and the Normans would have a larger army with which to attack. Fourthly he and his army were blessed by a Pope (Alexander II) which similarly made William's army and himself more confident, therefore that meant that they will be more fearsome and not so scared which made it even a bigger threat for Harold Godwinson and his Saxons.
